Battle of the Minds-Licensed for 2007 Action

28 June 2007—Apia, Samoa. Planning for the hugely popular ‘Battle of the Minds’ TV Quiz show for Year 12 college students has started in earnest.

A combined project by the Rotaract Club of Apia and SBC-TV One, Samoa College will be preparing to defend the title it narrowly won over Faatuatua Christian Secondary School last year.

President-Elect for Rotaract, Mr Taufasia John Tagiilima says, “We’ve already started the framework and planning as this year is a very busy one with SPG, Teuila and the Rugby World Cup crowded into August and September. But we’re very confident that Battle of Minds, kicking off on 15 September will add to the excitement of that period. More importantly, to help our Year 12 students prepare for their final exams.”

According to Tagiilima, the top six schools from the inaugural 2006 competition will have automatic entry to this year’s competition. Entry forms and registrations are being mailed out to many schools in Upolu.

Another exciting aspect is that for 2007, Battle of the Minds will be extended to include colleges from the big island of Savaii.

“We are also very happy to announce that our Naming Rights sponsor, Digicel Samoa, has confirmed its commitment to Battle of the Minds. For Rotaract and SBC, we take this as a mark of confidence in the community and sponsors that the Quiz did well last year. More good signs are that even though we haven’t yet sourced further sponsorships, we have already received interest from prominent companies and corporations looking to be involved. So we’re very confident that there will be an excellent line-up of prizes and benefits to participating schools; separate to the academic part that Battle of the Minds brings to our Year 12 students nationally.”

Rotaract has over the past 5-weeks convened weekly meetings to action and monitor activities to a tight schedule. At the same time the club is organizing its annual ‘change-over’ ceremony for early July where the President and his executive officially take up their positions.

Battle of the Minds is limited to 16 colleges taking part. It will start on 15 September and will run for 6 weeks. The semi-finals and finals will be held on 13 October and 20 October respectively. The program will be televised live on SBC-TV one and will be repeated mid-week by SBC and pending confirmation, will be repeated on the Lady Samoa II and Lady Naomi ferries. The Ministry of Education is centrally involved to ensure adherence and relevance of content to Year 12 curricula.

Schools with automatic entry to Battle of the Minds 2007 are: Samoa College, Fa’atuatua Christian Secondary School, Robert Louis Stevenson, St Mary’s College, Avele College and CCWS (Pesega).

Rotaract spreading spirit of Christmas

The Rotaract Club of Apia helped spread Christmas cheer to many sick children at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital, yesterday.

Club members visited the Paediatric Ward to give out food, drinks and toys to the children who will be spending Christmas there.

They also donated material for curtains which they said would brighten up the ward.

President of Rotaract, Ofeira Fa'asau, said yesterday's visit was made possible by the assistance from Rotaract Redcliffe Club, Brisbane, Australia.

"We have just finished "Battle of the Minds" for the school kids and now we want to help the sick kids," said Ms Fa'asau.

Rotaract made a similar donation last year.

"We want this to be an annual event," she said.

The Rotaract Club of Apia is beseeching the help of the public again this Holiday Season in gifting the pediatrics ward at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital with books and toys for the children. This is part of the Club’s annual International Project where it usually pairs up with one or more of its international counterparts to provide aid and support to each other.

Last year, for their international project, RCOA helped the Rotaract Club of Rarotonga through extensive fundraising and sponsorship drives, to buy food supplies for the island of PukaPuka in the Cook Islands, which was devastated by the multiple cyclones in early 2005.

This year, RCOA is cooperating with its sister Club in Redcliffe, Australia to provide new curtains, linens, books/magazines, toys, wall hangings and posters for our pediatrics clinic at Motootua. This was decided after much deliberation and liaison with Dr Aiga Sesega, a General Practitioner at the National Hospital. The Club is set to give the “dreary” place a minor “facelift” just in time for Christmas.

“Initially, it was decided that we would undertake to paint the walls bright colours, with pictorial settings, etc – to create a fun and happy atmosphere,” says RCOA President, Ofeira Faasau. “However, we have ruled out that option due to the fact that the hospital will undergo major renovation within the next few months, and any effort in facilitating this service would have only been a temporary one.”

The pediatrics ward has been a special concern for Rotaract since it’s reestablishment in the end of 2004, when they also fundraised and gave out Christmas presents for the hospital-bound children of Samoa who weren’t going home for the holidays. This year, with the help of the Rotaract Club of Redcliffe and the Samoan public, RCOA hopes to create more smiles and make the children’s ward at our National Hospital a brighter and more cheerful place!

“The children of Samoa have very special places in each of our hearts and whatever we can do to help those who need it, we are more than happy to do, in whatever insignificant way we can,” Faasau said.

In this quest, the Club will be holding a Toy/Book Drive Siva on Wednesday, 6th December, at the Bora Bora Bar, Togafuafua. Doors open at 6pm. You are cordially invited to join them for a fun-filled night to support their cause! Please feel free to bring along as many toys and/or books as you want, and help the Rotaract Club of Apia create smiles this Christmas!

Telecom Samoa Presents In-Kind Prizes for Rotaract Quiz!

In addition to its monetary sponsorship of the Telecom Samoa College Quiz “Battle of the Minds”, currently rolling into its fifth week, Telecom Samoa presented to the members of the Rotaract Club of Apia their in-kind support in a variety of prizes for the students. The presentation took place at Telecom Samoa headquarters, on Friday, 1st September. Prizes awarded for the quiz include PreMo school bags, stationery vouchers, PreMo cards and "Battle of the Minds" polo-shirts for the officials.

“Battle of the Minds” is a fast-paced, exciting game that emphasizes knowledge, rapid thinking, and teamwork. It is designed to provide students with yet an alternative avenue in preparing for School Certificate exams. Telecom Samoa’s College Quiz “Battle of the Minds” is shown LIVE every Saturday at 10:30am on SBC One.

Rotaract members, Fiona Sapatu, Richard Neemia (Secretary), Sunny Seuseu, Litia Brighouse (Treasurer) and John Tagiilima (Vice President) represented the Rotaract Club and the Quiz Steering Committee at the presentation last week.

"We continue to be grateful to our naming rights and principal sponsor, Telecom Samoa," said Tagiilima, "for their endless support of this - our first major Community Service project, as well as putting the education of the future leaders of Samoa at the forefront of their campaigns, as is our (Rotaract) focus this year."

This information helps us improve the quality of the competition for both participants and watching audience. We are grateful that parents and teachers have taken notice, and have provided helpful comments on where we can improve – after all, our project is still a ‘baby’ and we are taking ‘little steps’ in leaps and bounds. To reiterate the high regard we treat this project we have acquired the help of academic professionals qualified in their individual fields. All the questions and answers the Club has received for the running of the show have been prepared and reviewed by qualified teachers and lecturers who are familiar with the Year 12 curriculum."

Telecom Samoa Keeps In Touch With Rotaract as Principal Sponsor for Secondary School Quiz!

One of the most anticipated events in the school year is about to begin! The first ever project of its kind to be undertaken by the Rotaract Club of Apia in partnership with SBC TV One, and sponsored by none other than Telecom Samoa.

Being a fairly new and young club, re-established by the Rotary Club of Apia just two years ago, this will be Rotaract’s first major Community Service project and one that has been in the pipelines for the last six months.

Advertising Manager for Telecom Samoa, Henry Tunupopo, expressed their full support and best wishes to the Club for the successful running of the project, on Tuesday, 1st August, when they presented Rotaract with a sponsorship cheque of $10,000 tala. Telecom will also be providing prizes for the event to the value of $3,000 tala.

President, Ofeira Faasau, accepted the cheque on behalf of Rotaract and conveyed their gratitude to the management and staff of Telecom Samoa for their generous help and support not only for the Club project, but their on-going interest in the education of Samoa’s youth – an area that the Club has decided to pay particular attention to this year.

Says Tunupopo, “this is an excellent initiative by the Rotaract Club of Apia, and it comes at a prime time where there is a high need to motivate and drive secondary school students to study and work hard for their School Certificate Exams. Studying by self or groups can sometimes be a tad repetitive and boring; and this quiz should bring out not only the competitive edge in the students, but also challenge the participants to strive for nothing short of the best”.

The “Telecom Samoa College Quiz” will see twelve (12) Secondary Schools in Upolu battle it out for the title as well as an array of prizes! Tailored towards getting the competitors ready for School C at the end of the year, three students will represent their school and get the chance to vie for one of three academic scholarships up for grabs in 2007.

Working closely with the Ministry of Education and SBC TV, Rotaract hopes to “foster competitive spirits amongst the participants in a fun environment as well as provide a quality learning experience not just for the students taking part but also the viewing public,” says Faasau, as the quiz will be screened live on SBC TV One every Saturday at 10:30am. It will be running for eight weeks and is due to start on Saturday, 12th August.

Our Major Project for 2006!

The Rotaract Club of Apia’s major project for this year is Secondary School Student’s Quiz. This project has been in the pipeline for a couple of months now and I’m pleased to report that it’s well underway now!!!

Here’s a quick outline of what we’re planning.

ROTARACT Community Services Project Outline:

ROTARACT SCHOLAR’S QUIZ

Purpose:
To provide students with an opportunity, give them an incentive to study for School Certificate exams in a fun environment. Foster competitive spirit and reiterate the value of education to our youth.

Proposed Event:
A secondary school quiz targeted at Year 12 students sitting School Certificate Exams.

Three individuals from each school are selected by the school to represent them in one team, one individual for each of the subject categories – Commerce, Arts, Science and whereas all can answer the General Knowledge category of the quiz.
16 schools will compete against each other making the total number of competitors 48.
The quiz will take place, one day a week (Saturday) over an 8-week period, the proposed timeframe being during August and September. The remaining 2 weeks, whereby the first week will be targeted for preparations for the Quarter Finals, and the last one for Semi Final and Final Rounds (please refer to Attachment – Quiz Schedule for clarification).
The quiz will work by process of elimination with 8 teams being eliminated by the end of week 6 into the competition (please refer to Attachment – Quiz Schedule for clarification). Henceforth, teams from each schools will get to compete twice in these Preliminary Rounds (Round Robin) and not just once.
There are prizes for the eventual individual winners from each category, as well as a prize for the school with the highest combined scores.
The event is sponsored by companies/ Club fundraising.

ED LAI FAMILY/UNDP FAREWELL

Rotaractors were privileged to be part of the Official Farewell Ceremony hosted by the Government of Samoa and UNDP for Mrs. Joyce Yu (Resident Representative for UNDP in Samoa)and our dear Mr. Ed Lai on the 20th of March at the pristine grounds of the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Vailima. Our Rotary Club of Apia liaison representative Ed will be sorely missed by Rotaract.

POTLUCK KARAOKE NIGHT

Rotaract had its own version of Star Search during March 17th potluck fundraiser and social activity at Skye's place at Vaivase. Thanks Skye, Sushi was Oishi Desu Ne!!! The purpose of this event was to encourage members to submit their subs for this financial year. But also for everyone to just kick back, relax and show their hidden vocal talents. From Mariah "Reichard" Carey to Jon "Ross" Jovi, the lineup was quite impressive. The main award of the night went to the Stars, Miss Ramona and Mr Sonny. Malo le pese pepelo!!! lol. Come midnight, nobody wanted to stop singing. Alas Richie ended the fun by packing up so he could go home to practice some more with the karaoke machine. lol. All in all, everyone had a super fun night!!! Another karaoke night in the future?

POST-VALENTINES FUNDRAISER SIVA

For those who missed out celebrating Valentines Day 2006, Rotaract hosted a post-Valentines dance and fundraiser at Paddles Bar and Restaurant at Matautu to kickstart club activities for this new year. The build-up to this function was well organised by our Club Services Director, Ms. Maxine Sausi and backed up by the support from all members and friends from the Rotary Club of Apia. Suffice it to say, the night was a huge success. Members and supporters turned up in Red, to blend in with the theme, "Red Night Special". Competitions and prizes were won, including a poetry competition for those attempting to serenade their lovers and some hoping to catch a potential valentine. It was also an excellent opportunity to introduce Rotaract to those who were present, with one prize awarded to the first person to join Rotaract. A big faafetai to all the Rotaractors who turned up that night and to those who donated prizes.

Faces of 2006 Rotaract

Rotaract 2006 began with a big bang, with a huge turn up for the first meeting, all were pleased to see the new Board up and running. President Ms Ofeira Faasau carried the meeting through with high spirits as the Directors present made a promise to achieve successful projects this year. The meeting ended on a high note with a photo session.

Hand-Over Ceremony

The Hand Over Ceremony was a success, lots of food, lots of drinks and loads of prizes. Congratulations to John Tagiilima for winning the Vice Presidents Trophy for Rotaractor of the Year.
Many gifts were exchanged including kisses from the beloved President of Rotary pictured above with Past Rotaract President Tausaga Tugaga.

Best dressed Rotaractors

Rotarians and Rotaractors had way too much fun last night at Tiafau to farewell Steve Baker and his good lady. The party was also an End of Year and Christmas party for Rotary which was of course a good excuse for everyone not to act their age. Master of Ceremony Fatu Tauafiafi was all wit lastnight coupled with sarcasm to make the night a huge success. Awards were given, prizes competed and a whole lot of laughter filled the evening. Rotaractors were fortunate to win two prizes for the evening in the form of Tugaga sisters. Rotaract President Tausaga Tugaga took home the best dressed couple award with her partner Jason, she was decked in an elegant green top and skirt, and he, promoting the cultural fashion with a nice red elei shirt. Rotaracter Ramona Tugaga took home best dressed female, with a beautiful red gown. Ed was also there dancing the night away, thank you to Rotary for the invitation. CSJ

Ofeir and John: Leading the 2006 Board

After a year of tireless work as a devoted Secretary to the Rotaract Club of Apia Ofeira Faasau was elected President on Tuesday at the usual venue. Seven keen members were present to determine who will hold the reins for this years activities, and after a close elections she won. Ofeira is currently working for the Public Works as an Engineer and is one of the founding members of the reestablished Rotaract Club of Apia.

Supporting Ms Faasau will be the newly elected Vice President, the ever cheerful and the ever so prompt Taufasia John Tagiilima. John joined Rotaract a few weeks after it was reestablished, his determination has been an driving force behind many of our activities this year. John is also Assets Engineer for the Samoa Water Authority.

Rotaractors and Melbourne Cup

Rotaractors turned up in full force to the Rotary Melbourne Cup fundraiser at Yatch Club and Kitano Tusitala on Sunday and Monday. The Rotaractors manned the bar, sold raffle tickets, drew the raffle, cleared and served tables and tidied up in the end. Gratitude to those that made especially to JT for making use of his bar-tending expertise, and of course to the girls who made the Cup easier for Rotary. Rotary Club of Apia Melbourne Cup Fundraiser 2005

Our Sponsor Club Rotary of Apia is requesting all members of Rotaract of Apia to assist them with their upcoming Melbourne Cup Fundraiser on Sunday 30th October at the Yacht Club at Mulinuu and at Kitano Hotel on Monday 31st of October. Walkathon - Walk for Rarotonga

A fundraising walkathon will take place this Saturday for the island of Pukapuka. Members are asked to meet at TJs Food Bar at 5:30am on Saturday for the 6:00am March to Mulinuu and back. Dont forget to bring your sponsor sheet and good shoes for the leisurely walk.

Rotary District Governor visits Samoa

Four Rotaractors had the pleasure of being present at a Rotary lunch to welcome District Governor Colin and his wife Judy. The lunch was hosted by our Sponsor the Rotary Club of Apia at Tiafau. The President, Vice President, Treasurer and International Director of the Rotaract Club of Apia had the honour of meeting the DG and his wife on Tuesday. Thats Treasurer Litia and myslef with Judy and Colin.
